Penydarren with wheel missing

Disaster - Wheel comes off Penydarren

Engine enthusiasts were disappointed when told the Penydarren will not run because it has lost a wheel! The locomotive had just finished a few trial runs when disaster struck, at the end of the line the inside back axle snapped, the engine did not fall over and was kept horrizontal by the coal boogie. The locomotive was then nursed back to the shed where it was propped up with wooden logs. An engineer said that they do not carry spare parts for the Penydarren and it would not run today. All museum staff were embarrassed and disappointed with the disaster and the show inside was unaffected. The handsome replica locomotive was built by staff at the former Welsh Museum in Cardiff. The Penydarren ran in the 1800's from Penydarren ironworks in Merthyr, to Abercynon , hauling its load of iron and unofficial passengers!
